How to avoid your dental implants going sideways when you get home from your dental vacation.

Dental tourism today faces new challenges according to Ms. Carla Helena Sanchez the new Director of Certified Dentists Internationale.

“The expanding dental tourism industry is in danger of getting a black eye with many dental tourism websites and dental travel brokers promoting any dentist who is willing to pay their annual membership fees.

The websites cannot possibly screen the credentials of the 1,000’s of dentists some agencies claim to list.  Consumers are often getting shoddy work from general dentists anxious to bag lucrative treatments by misrepresenting their qualifications to unsuspecting dental tourists.

The problem for the consumer is that over 85% of dentists on the planet are only general dentists - not formally trained or certified for the kind of advanced dentistry that most dental tourists require.

The American Dental Association notes…”most dental tourism takes place in developing nations (Mexico, The Philippines, Thailand, India etc) and most of these countries do not restrict general dentists to performing only general dentistry" (cleanings, drilling and pulling teeth.)  In the West, consumer protection laws prevent less-trained general dentists from attempting dental implants, root canals, oral surgery and other complicated procedures.

Ms. Sanchez continued: “Certified Dentists Internationale (CDI) endeavors to select only the very best board certified dentist applicants to join our association – we don’t approve every dentist applicant who wants to join us. We are very selective and do our due diligence on behalf of the patients.

Our Certified Dentist International members are among the very best with many being Presidents of their dental associations, dental specialist college professors, hospital maxillo-facial surgical department chiefs, award winners and distinguished lecturers at dental conventions.

In America general dentists often play fast and loose with the term "cosmetic dentist" as the field is not an ADA recognized specialty field and not taught in dental colleges as it is in Mexico and other countries.

Certified Dentists Internationale (CDI) is the new parent entity of the recently combined Board Certified Mexico Dentist Association (BCMD) and Board Certified Asia Dental Association (BCAD). The merger took place early in 2015 after winning the approval of their respective directors located in Mexico City and Manila’s Global City Philippines.

Certified Dentists Internationale staff assists potential dental travel patients select the right dentist for their case, gets free estimates, resumes, referrals, gives dental tourism advice and sets appointments without cost to the patient. And the patient doesn't lose sleep worrying about inadvertently ending up in a general dentist's chair for their dental implants or oral restoration.

Carla H. Sanchez former Presidente’ of BCMD will assume a Directorship in the new entity and will be responsible for overseeing the growth of Certified Dentists Internationale.

COSMETIC DENTISTRY, DENTAL IMPLANTS, ORAL RESTORATION in Mexico

How To Get The Best Cosmetic Dentistry, Dental Implants, Full Mouth Oral Restorations and more by Certified Dentists in Mexico

WAIT!  There's some important things to know about dentistry in Mexico and other developing nations such as Thailand, India and Turkey.

By David Mandich for the Board Certified Mexico Dentist Association

Dental tourists from developed countries need to be aware that things are not always the same as back home when considering treatments by a dentist in Mexico or elsewhere offshore. General dentists with only basic dental education are permitted in many developing countries to attempt advanced dental procedures without proper training or credentialing.

This is the most problematic of all the issue regarding dental tourism. This practice is a clear violation of consumer protection laws in most developed countries - but legal in many (including Mexico) developing nations.

In many developing nations (Mexico included), a general dentist may call him or herself a specialist in implants or endodontics without having graduated from a dental specialist college. To be Board Certified, they have to pass another battery of tests after specialist college graduation. Board tests are written, lab and oral exams given by a panel of specialists in their chosen field.

When you select a board certified dentist - you know that you are getting a dentist who has been properly trained to do your work.

Many foreign patients have unwittingly spent 1,000's of dollars on implants and makeovers by a general dentist only to have the work redone at a later date due to infections, misalignment and other problems.

Bottom line: Unless the dentist you select abroad is board certified for the procedures you need, you don't know what you will kind of work you will end up with. And to have the work redone is costly, often very difficult and not painless.

EBOLA & MEDICAL AND DENTAL TOURISM News Update 2014 Final

(Updated 3/1/2015)

Ebola is the most deadly virus to come along since the swine flu in 2009 and the related Asian bird flu or SARS. The first recorded swine flu influenza pandemic occurred in 1918 and killed an approximate 50-100 million worldwide. The more recent one was responsible for 1,000,s but not millions of deaths.
Now along comes ebola at a time when people are traveling more and the ebola virus itself being more communicable and lethal than the swine flu of 2009.

CABO NEEDS AN EXTREME MAKEOVER AFTER ODILE says the Board Certified Mexico Dentist Association

Hurricane Odile almost turned Cabo back into a fish camp..

Hurricane Odile hit Los Cabos and Baja Sur as a high category 3 causing widespread destruction to tourist facilities, local business and infrastructure.  At last count there were over 3,000 power poles knocked down, and most tourist hotels had their windows broken, some had structural damage and their white plastic pool furniture was returned to China.

The airport was shut down to all but emergency flights by the government and chartered planes ferrying tourists out of the region and emergency supplies and military police in. Most grocery stores were looted within a couple of days.

Needless to say - the last place on earth you want to take a dental vacation right now (besides Syria, Iraq or an ebola plagued African country) is Cabo San Lucas. There's likely other places we'd advise against but time and space won't permit.

But the rest of Mexico's popular dental travel destinations are doing just fine. As alternatives to a Los Cabos Dental vacation we recommend certified dentists in Puerto Vallarta, Tijuana and Cancun.

Also - If you have  a little more time and want to go somewhere more exotic where the dentists speak perfect American English and are even more affordable than dentists in Mexico - contact the Board Certified Asia Dental Association.
