EBOLA & MEDICAL AND DENTAL TOURISM News Update 2014 Final

(Updated 3/1/2015)

Ebola is the most deadly virus to come along since the swine flu in 2009 and the related Asian bird flu or SARS. The first recorded swine flu influenza pandemic occurred in 1918 and killed an approximate 50-100 million worldwide. The more recent one was responsible for 1,000,s but not millions of deaths.
Now along comes ebola at a time when people are traveling more and the ebola virus itself being more communicable and lethal than the swine flu of 2009.

Estimates vary widely as to how many could be infected by the time it burns itself out or God-forbid – mutates and becomes airborne. If it does – we’re looking at a doomsday scenario straight out of a Hollywood movie only worse.
The CDC projects the number of ebola infections doubling every month with a 70% patient mortality rate. So far 10,000+ have died in West Africa with seven countries and an estimated 20,000 there reporting infections. Many countries in Africa have closed their borders - a response similar  to what rural  African  communities have been doing for decades - dropping a tree across the road to isolate villages with infections.

On the plus side - Nigeria had  under a dozen  cases and  reportedly halted the epidemic.  Closing the border helped - but  no border in impervious to determined refugees or viruses. As of the end of 2014, Nigeria has claimed to have eradicated the virus within it's borders.

US Marine General John Kelly was predicting 30 million cases by Spring 2015. Lets hope he is overreacting and predicting a most extreme scenario. The United Nations health authorities feel that the virus is now under control and not spreading rapidly as it appeared to be several months ago.
That’s a wide range of predictions. Even if the truth is somewhere in the middle – the situation looks potentially ugly. The battle with ISIS in terms of casualties pales by comparison. The AIDS virus running rampant for over 30 years has claimed 35 million victims. To have many millions of deaths  caused by the ebola virus in a shorter time period is a doomsday scenario which the world has avoided so far due to relatively quick reactions by governments.
As of Dec. 31, 2014, there are not any reported ebola cases in Asia or Mexico – both prime medical and dental tourism destinations for patients from developed nations. There was one Ghanaian in Mexico suspected of having the virus but was found to be negative.

There have been several Ebola cases in the USA, France, England and most recently in Scotland. But less than a handful of deaths and these have been primarily health workers from Africa who were expatriated to their home countries for treatment. The death rate among health workers in Ebola affected countries in Africa has been high.

With the new low cost of fuel and flying it's time to pack your bags and get that new dental makeover or elective surgery you’ve always dreamed of.
